The Challenge
Te Kohanga Reo o Te Wananga Whare Tapere o Takitimu needed more than just a playground. They wanted a space that reflected their cultural heritage and supported tamariki in exploring and playing. They aimed to create a durable, safe, and vibrant playspace, inspired by the “mountains to the sea” theme, with natural and cultural elements woven into the design.

The Journey
With a clear vision in mind, the school looked for a partner to help bring it to life within their budget. NumatREC worked closely with the team to ensure the surfacing played a key role in the design. From the bold colours to the cultural details, every part of the surface told a story, including the symbolic eels representing the local whakapapa.

The Solution
NumatREC’s surfacing transformed the space into a dynamic and safe environment. A large māunga and flowing water feature, along with a spacious sandpit, created a natural and inviting space for tamariki. The materials ensured the surface would last for years with minimal maintenance, while keeping its vibrant look.

The Outcome
The final playspace exceeded expectations. Children now explore and play freely, while the surface design has become part of the community’s story. Matua Hook shared, “The outcome was better than I expected because of the colour and quality of the product. It’s a place where our tamariki connect with their heritage while they play.”
