NumatREC partnered with mana whenua and local contractors to revitalize the George Street Playground, reinstating Kāi Tahu’s cultural presence in the city and community. The playground’s design embraces the themes of mahika kai (food gathering) and kai hau kai (trade), reflecting significant aspects of Kāi Tahu heritage.

NumatREC contributed by integrating custom surfacing that features vibrant designs and traditional patterns, meticulously crafted to stimulate imaginative play and educate visitors about indigenous practices. Innovative features like a seesaw stopper enhance safety and accessibility, allowing children of all ages and abilities to enjoy the playground.

Collaboration with mana whenua was crucial to ensuring the playground authentically represents Kāi Tahu culture. Aukaha mana whenua advisory panellist Megan Pōtiki highlighted that the upgrades strengthen community ties and restore cultural visibility.

The result is a visually appealing, inclusive play space that encourages creativity and social interaction while fostering a deeper connection to local heritage. This project exemplifies NumatREC’s commitment to quality, cultural respect, and creating environments where communities can thrive.
