When Angels Childcare Centre in Takapuna was looking for a safer surface for their playground, they had very clear goals and expectations.

Karen Douglas, the Centre Manager at Angels Childcare Centre, explains, “we were trying to achieve a durable and sustainable surface, something which doesn’t hold the heat in summer and burn children’s feet!”

Having done some research online, Karen and her colleagues contacted Numat about replacing their playground surfacing, explaining that their existing surfacing was not performing well. Karen says they wanted to make sure that the “vision from the designers was supportive in us achieving what we set out to do.”

Although Karen was initially only looking at resurfacing their existing play space, when Creo, Numat’s design arm, presented them with an option to re-design the area with marginal cost difference, the opportunity was welcomed.

Creo’s design included artificial turf areas with safety surfacing for flexible play, Numat’s ‘Pour ‘N’ Play’ system as a bike track and a sleeper boardwalk leading to an existing boat with a large picture board showing boats and Rangitoto Island, connecting the kids to the local landscape.

Since completion of the playground 6 months ago, Karen and her team say the new playground and surfacing has certainly met their expectations in terms of safety, given that there have been minimal accidents.

What’s more, the new playspace has also led to a great boost in business, with Karen stating that there’s been “a lot more interest and inquiry into the centre since the playground has been refurbished.”
